Do you know any tips & tricks which would be useful for a Nokia N9 used by an elderly person or improve their experience of using the device?

Well, that's how I did it.

A few hints come to my mind:

- MyMoves by Topi Santakivi lets you launch predefined applications by using gestures

- N9QTweak option to change the icons grid (from default 4 columns to let's say 3 larger ones)

- N9QTweak option to boost the sound volume from default 66% to 100%

- Easy Answer - "When you receive a call, just raise the phone to your ear and it will be answered automatically. When you're done, simply shake the phone to end the call."

Thanks for the replies.

What about the Internet connection? The way Harmattan handles them is quirky even to me, so it will probably be even more quirky to the elderly person. They don't need to be online 24/7, I'd say they'll enable the connection rather on-demand.

It's more complicated than the primitive Android-style on/off toggle, still not so clear and simple as the Fremantle settings.

Unless one disconnects manually, the connection is being used automatically whenever needed. Still, once one disconnects, the connection is never used automatically. Is it possible to make all the connections be either used manually or automatically?

You will need to script something changing the gconf value for the/all connections and put it as icon on home screen.

But I use my WiFi as automatically (at home always online) and my GPRS connection as manual.
Whenever I am abroad and some app (mail/browser requests online demand, triggered by me) a popup appears to choose the possible internet connection.

But being always online will drain the battery. And when the user uses Internet once or twice a day - I guess it's useless to have the WiFi always on.

Is it possible to trigger a script whenever the device has connected to a network? On desktop we have the NetworkManager dispatcher

I use a similar configuration as described by peterleinchen: Automatic WiFi at home and work (probably like 12-16h/day) and manual 3G. Additionally, I switch to power saving mode during the night (there's a Toggle PSM script available).

From my experience, this setup is not very hard on the battery -- I still get roughly 2.5-3 days on one charge on my > 4 years old N9 (daily driver). But then again, I don't get/make too many calls.

You could try ProfileMatic, use a WLAN condition and custom action when connected.
