No. To get yahoo imap on your phone, you would need to upgrade your yahoo account.

No you don't
You can use Nokia Messaging. Free Yahoo IMAP
Yahoo made a special IMAP server for Nokia Messaging
Setup Yahoo email at Nokia Messaging - http://email.nokia.com
Signin to Nokia Messaging on the N900 and you're good to go with Yahoo push email.

Has anyone actually got Nokia messaging to work on the N900?
When you get the link sent through as a text, the website won't autodetect Maemo and only gives you the choice of Symbian OSs to install.
Can anyone advise here?

You don't need to get a link as text from the website.
Nokia Messaging already embedded in the N900.
Tap 'New Account' and choose Nokia Messaging from the list.
Then just signin to your Nokia Messaging account and you're good to go.
I got mine working fine by doing that.
does yahoo provide whatever service is necessary to push its webmail to an email client, such as the n900 in this case?
