I can not figure out how to enter the ASCII tilde character in the URL bar in the n900 browser (or any other application, including the terminal window).

This prevents entering URLs for many people's personal web pages, e.g.
http://www.example.com/~username/

Is there some trick that I am missing, or is this a big step backward from the n810?

Tap the tilde then press space on the keyboard.

It's because that row of symbols is also used for adding accents to regular letters. Apparently the next firmware update will make this a little easier.

Help!
I've changed the keys around, and now I no longer have the
Arrow tool (allows you to select text)
Fullscreen tool (resizes to fullscreen)

How can I change it back??

Also be careful not to add too many things, if it wraps a drop down is added
Code:
gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/key_labels -t list --list-type=string "[Tab,Esc,Up,Dn,~,|,>,CR]"
gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/keys -t list --list-type=string "[Tab,Escape,Page_Up,Page_Down,asciitilde,bar,greater,KP_Enter]"
