Yes I activated US (custom). I see the keyboard, both landscape and portrait, but not symbols page.

There is "typo". Symbol file should be: symbols_en_custom.xml

There is also the custom shell toolbar layout:

Extract the ZIP to "/usr/share/meego-terminal/toolbars/" directory. (Writing to that directory needs root permissions, so use "devel-su".)

Feel free to share and modify the files any way you like!

Did you selected & activated the new keyboard layout after installation from N9 settings menu?
Settings -> Time and language -> Text input

I love qwazix's portrait layout but I also love Kallela's landscape layout, so I've combined the two. Here's the new layout:
Like Akkumaru already noticed the problem and MK99 pointed out the reason, sargas, you have forgot to update the file name for importing the symbols file on the main layout file.

At the end of the your layout file "en_us_custom_with_arrows.xml", there is a reference to my symbols file:

Code:
<import file="symbols_en_custom.xml"/>
...while it shout refer to your symbols file, like this:

Code:
<import file="symbols_en_custom_with_arrows.xml"/>

I doubt not installing the toolbar is a problem in all honesty

I think the reason is that the views are actually completely different using also different text edit components.

The new message view is plain sheet page likely using the standard QTextEdit component, like most of the applications where arrow keys work (or equivalent QML components). The conversation view, on the other hand, is likely using some peculiar custom made text edit component and it's having a bug or lacking the support for arrow key altogether.

Indeed, it is a damn good question how the arrow keys of Swype keyboard still work on the conversation view! How does it signal the arrow key presses then??
