Bear with me while I try to explain what happened, so I'm not 100% sure myself

Basically when I go to the list of icons that show all the programs, I only have the basic ones like Web, Media Player, Calendar, etc... all custom installed ones are missing. Think there was a menu at the end Others or something like that but don't remember as I had a program installed (Mymenu or categorise, or something similar) that reorganised the categories.

So all was working fine with the new categories for the last few months, haven't installed anything new lately.

This morning went clicking around as I had few apps I wasn't sure what they do and one of them said something about menus in the title (no idea what the name was) Clicked on it, it opened a white screen with some writing and it said wait until it completes. I stupidly (!!!) closed the window while it was working. Then clicked on something else, and phone crashed. Rebooted, all looked ok and had to go out, so didn't go checking menues.

Now I'm looking at it and it had reverted to original menu structures but whatever was at the end with all extra shortcuts (which opened the second screen) is gone. I can use the main ones like contacts, etc. Some of the shortcuts that are on the desktop work, but again - the custom installed one don't, nothing happens when I click on the games for example.

Does anybody have an idea what any of these menu programs are called (if not I'll search through catalog to see if I recognise the names when i get a chance to get to the laptop)

Any idea how to troubleshoot that to see what is still installed, seems like the settings for the desktop are all messed up

HELP! Tried rebooting few times, no luck. Thanks for reading!

Did you try to reinstall (remove and install again) Catorize or MyMenu?

OK, I had the update icon flashing on the desktop so got into application manager from there. Uninstalled mymenu (no other apps related to the menus appeared) and then tried to reinstall it but said a package was missing. Accidently close app manager so now can't access it again to check what was the name of the package

Restarted the phone and still the same, desktop shortcuts still don't work (well Forcaweather works (?!), and the standard ones only nothing else)

Any ideas?

Go to terminal (ctrl + Shift + X) and type

Code:
root

update-desktop-database /usr/share/applications/hildon/

cp /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu /home/user/.osso/menus/applications.menu

First line went ok, second is giving me error:

Code:
cp: cannot stat '/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu': No such file or directory
Does it mean my whole settings file is missing?

Edited to add:
Just trying to see what is there in the root:
Code:
Nokia-N900:~# pwd
/root
Nokia-N900:~# ls
Nokia-N900:~# ls -l
Nokia-N900:~# cd /etc/xdg/menus
Nokia-N900: /etc/xdg/menus # ls
hildon.menu
Is that any help? Thanks for taking the time to figure it out!

Code:
cp /etc/xdg/menus/hildon.menu /home/user/.config/menus/hildon.menu
should do it, mind you it's better to do it as user, assuming no other app has played around with permissions.
