Other threads mentioned programs that would upscale dvd's to 800pixels wide which is just a waste of space and time.

I have been using Xilisoft and using the Archos profile it works perfectly.
other than one thing, one of the films I have converted gives me mono sound.

If you are ripping a dvd it should be ripped to a file that is 720pixels wide in order to make full use of the n900's resolution. Anything larger than 720pixels for a dvd file is a waste and any smaller would not look as good as it could otherwise.

Do you have audio sync problems using handbrake 0.9.4 for ripping a Blu-ray disc?
Scaled down from an hd source using handbrake to scale the movie. Great movie btw - I own it on blu-ray. I took out the audio to avoid attorney's.
I used the iphone/itouch preset and:
Under the picture tab - changed the width to 800
Under the video tab - changed the constant quality to 70.59% ( you could likely use less )
I call this quasi HD as it is higher than dvd quality.

Note: If your source material is dvd quality or less you do not have to do anything to the file unless* it is a file type that the n900 does not recognize.
