as in, nitdroid reads my fully charged battery as empty and switches itself off shortly after boot. but when plugged into power it works fine.

Charge your phone when you're on NITDroid until 100%. It won't happen again.

ok, but the battery level doesnt seem to be moving

you should notice that after a short while maybe 10-15 minutes it will show full battery then you can disconnect from power supply.

Solution:
Boot NITDroid > Power off (without switching to Maemo) > Charge until 100% > Unplug charger > Boot NITDroid again

My USB port is broken...and I"ve been having the same problem.

sorry but i believe until bme is sorted you may be out of luck.
my last n900's usb port came off so had to use eternal charger and was unable to use nitdroid properly.
although there may be a fix i am unaware of.

please correct me if i'm wrong

So what's the theory behind this issue ?

I usually charge the battery directly through a nokia battery charger (I carry 3 spare batteries)
