There is an internet provider here.
And landline...
cell works fine...
For myself...
I would rather torrent or stream what I wish to watch or listen to...
even Kodi ..
But cable I will never ever ever never have again....
My ex finally succumbed to cable...
and it was garbage programming, commercials and reality tv afterward..
I couldn't stand it.

I am quite content with the storage I have with gazillions of classic film and shows and audio...
and the odd new film now and then I torrent or stream..

For the most part though...
I haven't had much time for film yet...
I am still renovating, unpacking, chopping firewood for the wood stove and enjoying being outside with my rescues ...Cat-O and Eddie the 3 legged 1 eyed wonder puppy...

Mind ...I have been enjoying watching the National broadcast of the news in the evening and then listening to some Baroque or chamber music while the sun sets and the frogs start their symphony ..

But yes..I have the modern conveniences without the modern social problems of the urban areas...

We do have a village with most everything one needs ...and the prices are competitive with the city ...so even though it is wonderfully removed ...and feels remote...it isn't really ...

Hi. I was just kidding about the cable. You know me. Always looking for a cheap laugh! But in the advent of a cataclysmic disaster, nuclear attack or rising sea levels and so forth how long could you survive out there?

When we have good storms ...the power goes out on the island from downed trees and lines...
Then it is at least the next day before it is fixed ...
hence most residents here have multiple alternate options for such emergencies...
back up generators for their freezers...solar...wind...small hydro electric off of streams...wood stoves..pellet stoves...passive solar heating...etc.

For myself...
I have more than enough land for a very decent garden to feed enough for a few families...the soil is great..the stream's excellent for irrigation..and it's output is good enough for my electricity needs until the dead of summer...so it isn't flowing for only a couple months then..I have had a local expert look at setting it up..it is the most viable of all the alt electricity generating options.
it should run me about 5000 - 10000 ..for a set up...that will give me more than enough electricity output I will have a surplus to sell back to the provincial electricity company.
My wood stove is a nice modern airtight...and I have a second stove that is suitable for a shop or second cabin...
I am on my own well...
I am on my own septic ...
So I am set up pretty good...

Hahaha..if society falls apart...My island community will do fine...
worst case is if it gets really bad ..move further north... to say Lasqueti ...smart bunch there..they are even more resourceful ...in fact they have their own currency ...really ! hahaha...
Anyway...
If bombs are dropped ..
My hillside isn't facing the continent ...so I think it wouldn't be too bad for me...
shouldn't be too bad period...

But really...if bombs start dropping...
unless you have a hermetically sealed bunker with enough... food (saying it doesn't go bad in the first 10 years) ....water ...filtered air ...and a waste disposal system ...and power to run it all for the rest of your natural life...and hope you don't get sick...too...
then really..
Bombs start falling...we are all hooped.
It is only a matter of how long after they drop...is all..

But any situation shy of that ultimate...and I am looking pretty good here

I would not really fear any bombing, the real threat is something else...

An island, hmm... What's the altitude from the current sea-level there? I's difficult to estimate the rise but it is going to be considerable; I'd feel more comfortable living in a place that is at least 40 meters up from where the water is now. (and I do )

Also I suspect there will be some challenges in farming to come, even as your soil is fertile now...

I am in no worry or fear of climate change water levels disturbing me..
My altitude is perfectly fine...
The icecaps can ...and will prolly go....and it won't disturb my place in the slightest.
I am on an island ...yes...this island is not at water level...
There are perhaps a few homes on it that may be in threat...
But not mine....
Most of this island is a hilly plateau ....
The uphill hike from the ferry is more suited to a mountain goat.
I will get the exact figures of the islands altitude ...and also exactly how high up I am as well from sea level...
But I have little to fear...I am quite high up...

And for many places farming in the future will indeed be a problem
..
Yet again...the changing climate is expected to grace the pacific coast of Canada with weather akin to what lovely weather California USED to have ...before their droughts...and fires...
At least that is how nice it is projected to be during the rest of my lifetime...

The price to live here will end up getting impossible to afford though...
I may end up selling in 20 years and moving further north up the coast....
It depends on a lot of factors...
I will be pushing to 70 then...
I may not even be alive...
So it is anyone's guess by then....

@Ends-O.

I'm happy to see you got this awesome place and that Cat-O and Dog-O loves the place.

Seems like a solid place when things go south. That's the reason I have several place to live in. The main problem will be transportation.

But in the end, we don't have to worry since we are in 5% of the population that have the best chance when the nature tries to end the civilization.

See you around.

Have you considered freeze drying food? Apparently freeze dried food can have a 25 year shelf life. Not sure if that is long enough to outlast the effects of a nuclear winter. On the bright side having a nuclear winter would be the solution to global warming. See. No worries!

yup dave...it is a great little island...good community here too...
good people...artists, musicians, artisans, craftfolk, farmers all...
Have all the amenities of the city at the same prices...without the ruin of the city...no fast food ...no high rises...etc...
speaking of high anything...except a few homes at or near sea level...most of the inhabitants have their houses away from the expected sea level increase due to climate change...in fact most have their homes a few hundred feet above sea level...so no worries there.

hahaha...mscion...my cat is crazy..he never has one of those days...not even a minute now that he comes and goes outside at will...he is embracing his inner mountain lion...
Only time he sits still is when I grab him...throw him on my lap...or my shoulders...or bedtime..and then he curls up and calms down and sleeps...

freeze drying is a good method...dehydrating too..
I like drying fruit and nuts for baking during the winter...lots of fun..
