Do you really think this is because people posted rude things, saw them mangled by the filter and deleted them? Sorry but that sounds like giving them too much credit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sc%75nthorpe_problem is also a good read (notice how I had to fix the URL to avoid the filter breaking it! ).

Reminds me of years ago when a mate and I attempted to wind up our Exchange Server admin, an unfriendly bastard (that one made it through! ) by discussing our weekend trip to Sc*nthorpe.

I agree...The most swearing I have seen here...is right here ..havin' a lark chit-chattin' about profanity....It is more than easy for people who wish malignant intent to be 100x more harmful, rude, and exhibit disgraceful behaviour without ever uttering a single swear word.
Making the swear filters even more severe will simply cripple commonly used out-of-context/ meaning interpreted words...thereby simply making writing here a frustrating pain. It will not limit the rude.
And 99.9% of the community doesn't need that kind of policing.

Forums such as "Billy-Joe-Ray-Bob-Jr.'s House-Of-Monster-Trucks-&-M16-Personal-Daycare-Defence-&-Topless-BBQ-Beer-Parlour" site...have more of a need than us for fanatic profanity filtering.

I know. Why do you think i created this thread a year ago? Focus on the tech. No news here.

Well, let's make the swear filter yet more stricter: replace any character by a '*'

That's actually not a bad idea. Although I suggest phasing it in gradually. Let's start with doing it only for members with 4 or more consecutive consonants in their nicks.

Err, no. We both have only 3 consecutive consonants.
