Hello friends. I am learning little by little, I already have the system updated. I have other things to do, but I am already installing some applications. Angry Birds works great!

Could we make a list of the 10 apps that each person recommends?

I will install them all! Haha.

If you have updated the system to CSSU testing or Thumb and have installed rootsh and presuming you do just use as a fun second phone (or 50th if you are a collector):

1. Opera 12 and update certs (instructions in thread "Devel upgrades" thread) and enable in Opera (typing about:config to url bar) TLS/SSL 1.2

2. mSoma internet radio

3. Pidgin messenger with Telegram plugin

4. BlessN900 camera (unless you want to also shoot videos which you can with default camera)

5. Mypaint drawing program

6. Picodrive and search to download for it Psycho Pinball (or I may have it or the link is in some game thread here where I asked about it)

7. Youtube-dl (I think instructions are given by user nonsuch in his N900 page and link to it in his signature).

8. Orientation lock applet (to force landscape and if you use phone also change in phone settings the landscape)

9. Load applet (to see mem plus cpu use as bars in top of your screen and with that you get also to your top bar launch menu option for screen capture and screen recording)

10. Simple brightness applet (to get in your top bar launch menu five brightness modes to use).

Ten asked, ten given. But if others have same you will not get as many as if you would ask not to name the same as other users already have done.

After you have installed all you want disable all the repositories in application manager. And then if you want to make your device faster/snappier then that is another thing to talk about: overclocking, swap/memory settings, unneccessary system load to uninstall, disabling transitions etc.

And then there is privacy and how to make N900 secure to use: iptables settings for firewall, ssh, VPN. I haven't studied those yet.

And then to share your connection or using as server or whatever.

Many things and topics you can dive into.

What would your next ten be Maemish?

I'm looking at the cpumem applet source code (fixed two syntax errors yay!). It compiles, but doesn't display anything, and I don't understand the gtk+hildon stuff at all because my brain is so small.

The pidgin messenger sounds nice for telegram. I can hardly insist everyone I know use IRC.

Reading through this and other threads on the topic, there is only one reasonable conclusion: there is no such thing as "top 10 recommended applications".

For example, I have absolutely zero use for most of Maemish's list, except for items 8, 9 and 10. (And zero use for endsormeans' list either.)

Other applications:

unzip addons

cute explorer or some other filemanager

leafpad (sorryyy!)

Abiword

Swappolube

Easy Debian with Netsurf 3.9

Some have made the cutenews to work for rss feeds

If someone would make cutetube2 to work again then that

Modrana for maps

I have used this as my main phone so not used is as a hobby or hacker stuff. That is why my priority is with what works fast on the go for everything instead of security level extreme and thread level defcon 1.

It is understood that these reccommendations are personal and subjective. They are valuable and interesting nonetheless.
