There is - it's called a PSP...

I see what you're saying though. At present, the 770 doesn't have the geek factor associated with PDAs, given that it's being sold at the consumer market rather than the business market.

I sent an email to Erkko Antitla of Nokia, and he has requested to have Internet Tablet Talk added to Maemo Planet feed list.

Thanks Roger.

Btw, I added TeleRead in itT's Ebook Sites.

Take 3. Firefox managed to crash the first two times I tried to post this live, sending my words to Electron Hell. I've redone the post in WordPad to copy and paste...

Today's entries are more Nokia-related than 770-specific...

Nokia's global egomania
http://mbites.com/node/480
>>>Nokia continues to want to take over the world. I am in Helsinki at one of their press conferences where no-one really answers questions. "What do you plan to do about Happy Slapping? Parental controls on the handsets?" I ask. The answer comes back that it's "down to parents to exercise control". Sure, but what happens when all those Nokia handsets get confiscated by schools, huh guys?
-- the two sites he lists for additional info seem to have none. Nokia isn't the only vendor of cellphones with cameras. To try to place the blame for psychos doing Happy Slapping on Nokia's doorstep is its own brand of egomania. If not outright psychosis. I say we should go whole hog and just ban human beings!

Web Tablets Are Coming
http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008558.html
>>>A couple months ago when I first saw the news of the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, I couldn't figure out why anyone would want the thing - it's not a PDA or a phone or a computer. But that's all changed now - using my PSP as an instant-on Web Tablet has completely opened my eyes.
>>>I'm now a lot more bullish on Nokia's Internet Tablet - it has instant on as well, has better screen resolution than the PSP (though I think it's physically smaller overall) and though it does have a stylus, hopefully this will be a good thing as it'll let me tap in URLs without so much trouble. Also, it's Linux Debian based so it's going to have a ton of neat apps ready for it as well...
-- uh oh. Russell Beattie is now excited about the 770. Get rid of that PSP toy, Russell! Join the HotSpot Men!

Can Nokia Read the Signals?

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...050827457tc024
-- it really amazes me that in the millions of words of analysis of Nokia's top-level change and their challenges in the cellphone marketplace, *not one* article has mentioned the 770! The 770 is Nokia's most significant product -- how long will it take for these people to catch up?

I hope *Kallasvuo* understands the importance of the 770!

QuickTime Alternative 1.60 Beta 2
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...lternative.htm

I put this here to actually solicit an *answer* in this thread. The 770 does not support QuickTime. Is there such a beast for Linux, and the Debian flavor, at all? Does anyone know if the above could be ported to Maemo?

And this now makes me wonder about something else too: can Windows Media Video play under Linux? Is there such a player? And could it be ported to Maemo?

According to Nokia, the 770 video support includes MPEG1, MPEG4, Real Video, H.263, AVI, 3GP. I think we'll still need/want WMV and QT.

Symbian Not in Nokia's Future?
http://www.psionplace.com/articles/2...an-Not-in.html
>>>Nokia didn't say why it chose not to use the Symbian OS for the 770. At the time of the 770's announcement, the company's vice president of convergence products Janne Jormalainen told internetnews, "This is the first step in creating an open-source product for broadband and Internet services."

>>>Zoals bekend, werk ik hier bij Nokia aan het Nokia 770 Internet Applet, een apparaatje gebaseerd op Linux en Gnome technologie. Best leuk. En we zijn nog op zoek naar mensen om het project te komen versterken, hier in Helsinki. Kijk hier, het gaat om hackers, project-managers etc. Ik ben beschikbaar voor vragen etc., via email/IM.

http://www.eriksmartt.com/blog/archives/146
>>> Now for something completely different. The Nokia 770 has been on my list of lust-worthy technology since I first heard about it. This is a pocketable linux tablet with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a nice browser, and applications for streaming media. And to top it off, the whole platform is open source. I had the pleasure of playing with a prototype 770 last week, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. The screen is fantastic, and I could easily see this device being used for casual browsing instead of lugging around a laptop. It really is that nice. And being linux-based, this thing is going to get a HUGE number of applications (at least the kind that geeks like me like.)

CNet reviews Sony PSP web browser
http://www.psphome.com/index.php?do=viewarticle&id=274
-- he gives a concise summary. But I'll be damned -- he doesn't provide any link to the source and I've just spent ten minutes of agony going through the CNet site and came up empty! I'll say one thing for this browser: it does Java. That the 770 will ship without Java is a shame.

Ten things I hate about the PSP
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6449_7-6061582.html
-- some of these have actually been addressed by Sony. But what this guy *really* wants is a 770! He just doesn't realize that yet.

Hotspot Zone
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6659_7-...-1.html?tag=fs
-- OK, so I couldn't find that PSP browser review, but I did come across this!
>>>Want the Web wherever, whenever? The same wireless networking that is invading homes and offices is now going public, with thousands of so-called hot spots throughout the United States. All you need is a notebook or other device with Wi-Fi, and you can get high-speed access at cafes, airports, and hotels. Whether you subscribe to a commercial service such as Boingo or T-Mobile HotSpot or go it alone with a community connection, chances are there's a hot spot right around the corner. For a list of nearby hot spots, just enter your zip code and click Go. Or if you have something more specific in mind, you can fill out any of the power search options.
