It's just like everything else. Vote with your feet. Only download apps that are finger friendly.

That's not an absolute.

Nothing scratches a screen like a stylus.

I'm old enough to still remember the first word I etched into the screen of my Newton Message pad. It was "Chair" - the only damn word the thing could recognize.

I'm for digging a hole and burying all the styluses and the plastic screens they require right now.

While we're not talking about capacitive vs resistive...

Stylus, as far as I can tell, is only useful for:

- Handwriting: yes, this is such a natural input method for slate tablet
- Sketching: yes, this is a great use many people will want/need
- Interacting with small screen elements: Useful for remote terminal access or running ported/emulated desktop apps

Other than the 3 above, finger > stylus...

There are platforms are forced to design and test without one (well design and if not their app gets rejected).

Err.. I can think of one reason doesn't fit into any of those categories.

Use when your fingers are dirty. Great if you eat any food that gets your hand dirty and it requires some alcohol rubs or to wash your hands to get the oil off. Also useful when cooking too, or doing any task where your hands may be dirty (painting, oil from working on the car, etc..).

Those are special environmental cases that need you to protect both the stylus and the case. You can put screen protector and a case for a finger friendly slate for those cases as well.

It's not really special case related to the ui paradigms mentioned on my list above...

Or you can get some patience and learn to use a wet wipe, mate!

Not all places give wet wipes. Even Popeyes doesn't give you a wet wipe consistently (though I love it when they do). And a screen protector doesn't help.. (it protects the device's screen) but you still have to clean the screen protector later on (I know I've done it a few times until I realized I have the stylus). Though granted it's more applicable to a device your going have with you at all times rather than a large slate/tablet.

It's a tool. Some need its use, some don't.

God forbid people were all the same. We artists would be screwed in a capacitive world.

These three uses would cover most content creation, which is a major use of tablets (unlike PMPs / ITs, where even simpler controls would do).

You can eat with your fingers, but to cook you would need a good knife.

@sopwith: I would think the keyboard as the #1 content creation tool on a computing device... By a significant margin.
