I have seen threads on here about how to use a USB mouse on the n800. I had a hard time understanding the instructions. For instance, I do not know how to log in as root and some of the other things that this seems to require. Can anyone give a tutorial for newbies?

It's in a deb now; that's in the main thread too, but apparently you stopped reading before you got to the easy part...
For root, just install becomeroot or easyroot, or reflash the device with rd mode. I recommend becomeroot, but easyroot has its advocates too. (Of course, that's not even necessary for this case.)

easyroot is in the Maemo Extras catalouge. You can install it right from the app manager.
