I tried using the HAM today only to notice that on opening, it shows operation failed...I checked the uinstall option and couldnt find my Installed applications....I checked the log and even on xterm and this was the output

/home/user # apt-get -f install
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Read error - read (21 Is a directory)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I tried disabling and enabling the repos,rebooting hoping the problem will be corrected all to no avail..I'ved searched and perused a thousand thread hoping to get a solution to this but still no luck.....A help from your guys will be appreciated....Thanks.

@harry_e20000

[off-topic: ignore davdav, seems to be a troll]

Can you post the directory listing of /var/lib/dpkg?

i.e. do $ ls -al /var/lib/dpkg
and post the exact contents of the output.
