Can anyone tell me in a nutshell whats the difference between kubuntu and ubuntu? I thought the 'K' is for KDE but doesn't ubuntu uses KDE as well?

but this is due to the fact that when we started the project plasma mobile was still stabilizing and was not ready for even a tech preview !
Maybe you still think that is true
but there is now more focus on plasma from upstream KDE and from the wider Ubuntu/Kubuntu communities so we felt that a tech preview would be ok.
We will get some documentation done on how to install to a device (N900) before 10.10 is finally release so you can play around with it. Plasma Mobile rocks!!
