Has anybody done any work on creating alarms based on GPS location? I'm doing some planning on features for my app, MaeCalTasks.

One thought I had was to create tasks and add GPS coordinates to a set of tasks (say shopping lists). Each time the user gets within a certain range of the stores tagged via lat/long in the tasks, I would create an Alarm that would go off to tell the user not to forget to stop at the next closest store.

Any thoughts?

I had thought of it as well, I don't know of any yet.
If you are planning to implement,I hope you consider adding cellID based location as well.

That is a great concept. Really. But it only makes sense if the gps runs all the time, and that has battery limitations. If you switch the gps on when needed then you are planning and may as well pop out to the shop then and there.

My thought,
Macro coverage will be done by cellID/Tower based location service.
Once we are near or in the macro area, Try switching to GPS for micro coverage.
In an effort to save battery,We could include a GPS time-out or something of that sort.
But all these are easily said than done.

Well, from my app I planned on launching "errand mode". I'd probably turn it on to/from work and when out on the weekends running errands.

My intention is definitely to be explicit about when to turn the GPS on for this function.

FWIW, there is 'restinpeace' in the repos which does cellID-based alarms.

Thanks. I'll grab the source and see how it works.
