“Finland’s Act on the Protection of Privacy in Electronic Communications which safeguards confidentiality and privacy in telecommunications was the main reason behind TRI’s move to Finland."

Except that all data in/out travels through Sweden. And our dear and lovely nordic brothers and sisters in Sweden have allowed NSA to directly tap into finnish data flows for a long time.

Wasn't the new line to Germany completed short time ago?

Another thing... figures seem to be constantly changing. First it was 300 000 devices this year, now it's about 150 000 and 300 employees.

(not that I disagree with your scepticism about them ever actually coming to market)
Thanks, but this is not a video, it could be plastic dummy, or just in different cases.

There is a short drop test video.

Also some bending test.

Some ice bucket test...

Video of prototype, with very early prototype software.

Not much, but at least prototypes do exist.

New direct data cable to Germany is already at the bottom of the ocean and will be operational 1h 2016.

The only reason for them to put production in Finland in their case is to bring credibility to a security focused phone, meaning that they expect to sell these phones outside China as well. Another reason are the facilities in Salo. Volume projections don't seem out of control though.
Unknown phone manufacturers making these kind promises just don't fill me with a promise. Reminds me of bigger scale BYD and their car battery adventures in US, and they at least had Buffett backing them as well as BYD having a history as a company. Just for the stimulus money and other aid being wasted.

I hope all the best to them but all this is a pie in the sky stuff so far.

”Turing-puhelin valmistettaisiin sataprosenttisesti Suomessa.”

Chaon mukaan tietoliikenteen yksityisyyttä varjeleva tietosuojalainsäädäntö Suomessa oli suurin syy TRI:n päätökselle siirtää pääkonttori Suomeen.

Turing HQ will be in Salo (beacuse Finland has strong information security laws). Production starts in April. 10-20 employees/1000 phones. 300 000 phones will be made this year. Main market is China. 100% Finnish made.
woo-hoo!

has me seriously doubting maemo's epic return to the modern day world of the consuming masses...

Sooo, now finally Review SailfishOS has published his take on the TRI / Salo business and i totally see why he has been quiet on this until having some facts collected.

I think most troublesome to TRI in holding the shedule without at least changing the specs is Apples Patent on Liquidmetal for 2016.
Until they come out with credible info on how those patents does not apply to TRI LiquidMorphium, i will call faul.

Also the Security Concept has been taken into question for a long time already back when it was still the QSAlpha.

And still the awkward rumor of Google Play store being preinstalled or installable is not trustworthy without details.

Maybe they will produce something this year.
But thanks to reviewSailfishOS summary, i am confident it will not be the specs provided.

Just a thought, but is anyone here close enough to Salo to drive by and see if there's a parking lot full of cars or any other sign of a substantial workforce there? If they're actually planning to crank out phones soon(TM) the industrial engineers and technicians would have to have been at work for months (24/7 like the IE burnout farms do) getting a shuttered factory back up and running with a new production line.

What's the issue with running the Google Play Store? It runs fine on the Jolla phone, even if it's not installed through official channels.

What's the issue? It's not that complicated.

If you want to ship your phone with Google Play Services (or distribute them in any way), you need to obtain a license from Google. You need to pay for it, but also follow the rules (MADA) associated with it.

That's one of the reasons it is hard for Jolla to get OEM partners and rumor has it that's also why Microsoft canned their Android app layer, because manufacturers who would sell such phones along other Android phones could lose their Google Play Services license.

The idea that Turing could get blessing from Google to use Google Play Services on Alien Dalvik is straight up nonsense and impossible unless the rules change.

EDIT:
So it seems like the exact rules are protected by NDAs, but this is the clause that should prevent OEMs from using Alien Dalvik alongside their Android lineup:

Google restricts any OEM from ‘forking’ Android, noting in the MADA “any actions that may cause or result in the fragmentation of Android” are not permissible.
Either way, if BlackBerry failed to achieve this and Microsoft probably failed as well, it is quite unlikely this Schrödinger's Turing company will be successful.
