You can already quickly change profiles by clicking on the status area. Also if you want more profiles I highly recommend ProfilesX.

Depends. IMO accessing thru status area means it's more readily available. With a widget I need to find the desktop the widget is on before I can use it - unless I put it onto all the desktops in which case it kind of negates the purpose of having different desktops.
