Fur the record, dolby surround sound severely degrades audio quality!

it's on by default, and if you care for audio quality at all, you'll turn it off.

it seems to reduce the sounds stage laterally, and attempts to add a third dimension (instead of sounding like you're between speakers,, it tries to make it sound like there's a speaker in front of you)

It makes it sounds flat.
