Check this page for flasher options http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=82693. Maybe some user data causes such a behavior.

You, my friend have a corrupter meegotouchhome.css file!
I had one earlier, but luckily my N9 constantly connects to my wifi so I just SSH'd into my device and restore my backed up version.
Not sure how to fix it without ssh

Well Nokia do at least know how to build a decent phone, just apparently don't know how to support it..

ssh is a way to access your phone's terminal through your computer. You need putty, and developer mode enabled on your N9

calm down and do the CLEAN FLASH via NaviFirm...rootFS.bin + EMMC.bin
it'll completely clear and set your phone to the out-of-factory state..
there's the newest comprehensive thread devoted to this, just find it and follow the instructions...
don't worry, some tweaking is not gonna kill your N9..
