Brilliant.

My operator allows me to forward all SMS to an e-mail address, at the switch - but this is really great for those who can't.

Curious, what do you use to send the mail? Modest backend or a hand rolled client?

<edit>Never mind - it sends from the e-mail application, not Conversations. I found it. Super piece of work. Thank you.</edit>
I love the concept. I attempted to do this yesterday and discovered there was no capability available.
  • I downloaded/installed the program from the garage page
  • Rebooted.
  • Found the Textmessage to E-Mail settings line in Settings.
  • I've enabled forwarding for SMS both incoming and outgoing.
  • Selected the appropriate From: e-mail account
  • Filled in the default To: field
  • Pressed Done

When I try to forward an SMS from Conversations I can not figure out how to invoke the send to email address part of this. When I enter an e-mail address in the address line of Conversations Forward pane I receive the "x@y.com is not one of your contacts" error message. I looked in Applications and did not see this was a stand-alone application.

I know it will be very simple and straightfoward once I'm shown but I am missing it at the moment.

@hawaii
Yes it uses modest for sending the mail.
Since the PR 1.2 and Qt we have a plugin in modest
(qtm-modest-plugin) with a better dbus-api for sending
emails.

@Shinigamijim
No, I don't know how you could reply to them by mail.

small question, are the forwarded SMSes still being kept in the conversations DB? if so, could they be prevented of doing so ? i'm just thinking of an application I wanted a long time ago already for my N900, having one public and one 'hidden' secret area, receiving all calls/sms to/from a certain blacklist of contacts. but just the forwarding and no storing would be fine as well, as a start.

They are kept in the conversations DB. And you can not
enable/disable forwarding for a single contact.

Great App :-) . Definitely will make the already versatile N900 more versatile.
