I'm not sure you want to be charging the n900 directly from a low quality (fluctuating) power supply.

Won't 700 mA be too little? I have a 1000ma car-usb charger but my N900 will tell me it has stopped charging a few minutes after being plugged in.

i am charging smartphones etc with direct solar chargers for more than 2 years without problems. i am also charging n900 with a 450mA solar charger for 8 months.
if in case you feel it's a bad option you can charge 4 AA batteries and then plug your n900 on the batteries as an external power supply

I have something very similar, works fine, except ever time is starts and stops charging the screen comes on and it tells youo it's charging, then it tells you to disconnect your charger from the wall.. think it's a bit counter productive at times..
