I tried to post the following as a new thread, but it doesn't seem to have passed moderation after two days, so I'll post here:

After nearly 5 years of faithful use, surviving many drops and fumbles, the N900 has finally died. Well, it is at least paralysed. I'll explain.

I've always been careful with the micro-usb port, but never strengthened it in advance, as I see some have been recommending. That's a slight regret.

Anyway, it came off, so I temporarily ...

I have a spare N900 and I think about soldering the port. What are the usual precautions I should keep in mind? I wouldn't like the N900 to die.

I've done about 20 solders in my whole life.

The USB port on my N900 has started to fail (its not dead yet but its giving symptoms of having problems).
I have discovered a local hackerspace that might be able to help me fix the port. Does anyone have a link to the right post (in this thread or otherwise) showing how to do the USB repair? In particular, a list of the required components and tools would be very helpful.

I can't trust my soldering skills anymore even though I used to do a lot of it when i had younger eyes and hands. These guys put a new port in for 15 quid plus postage costs. Turn around was 4 days.

Why do all these mobile phone repair sites look sketchy as hell

I may consider it though - I really want my USB port fixing and there's not a chance in hell I'm doing it myself.

Hi guys, usb port solder is a good practice, but not prevent wear resulting from usage, I try this http://www.banggood.com/Magnetic-Ads...p-1004685.html Magnetic Adsorption Micro USB Universal Charger Cable and it work great, this protect the micro usb port in n900 from wearing for repetitive use.
charging and data transfer work as normal usb cable, one piece is attached to usb port an connect and disconnect is made via magnetic attraction thus prevent stress and wearing in the phone usb port กกก CAUTION !!! File down the USB cable's hooks as described by dr_frost_dk http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...61&postcount=2 at begin of this post
The metallic piece that still attached to the phone have very tight fit,if the hooks are not well smooth with a file is very hard to remove later without damage the n900 usb port
กก you are advised !!
instead of the filed hooks I use small pieces of double sided tape to mantain male usb united to n900.
I use OtterBox case in my phone with wrist strap

Received one magnetic cable today from banggood. Seems to be a great cable and not expensive.
I bought it after being disappointed by the quality of this one from geeektech.
Connection continuously fails and it is a lot less robust.

UPDATE : see this post

I am ordering a few of the banggood mag chargers. Hoping they work better than my experiments with first Touchstone and then Qi inductive charging. Both pad chargers require not only good contact but also either soldering in with a charge manager board or very careful shorting of the USB data pins and having a wonky ribbon cable to the USB port
Simple is best, a mag cable seems smarter than inductive receiver pads if I it lasts and makes contact.
Only problem I see is not loosing the adapter plug when I use a USB flash drive to transfer files form my N900.
