Do you have "AutoDisconnect" installed? I often experience this symptom when I have a process that is actively trying to use a wifi connection and I wander out of range. The phone will not automatically flip over to my TMobile connection. I have to go to Settings->Phone->Network Mode and manually change it from GSM to 3G or Dual before I can then manually connect to the TMobile network. I don't know if it's correct or not, but I've always assumed this behavior was driven by my "AutoDisconnect" settings.
If my phone is not actively using the wifi network at the time, however, the phone will automatically flip over to the 3G connection.

I had a similar problem when autodisconnect was monitoring my 2G/3G/cellular connection. It stopped after setting autodisconnect to ignore my cell connection.
