Alcatel Introduces World’s Thinnest Smartphone, Own Phablet, and a Mid-Ranger

Alcatel has unveiled its 2013 line-up at CES and has done so in a way which brings the world’s thinnest smartphone to the market, the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra (pictured above). It measures only 6.45mm in thickness and features a 4.7-inch HD AMOLED display. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, eight-megapixel camera, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on-board.

Next up is Alcatel’s own take on phablets, the One Touch Scribe. It is the first smartphone powered by the 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 SoC and packs a five-inch HD screen. Radio has support for 4G speeds, and there’s an eight-megapixel main camera at its back. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is on-board and so is 1GB of RAM.

The One Touch Scribe X packs the same five-inch screen, 1080p resolution, twelve-megapixel camera, 720p HD front-facer, and a 1.4GHz quad-core CPU.

HP announces two new Sleekbooks, one with touchscreen

HP has announced two new Ultrabooks in the low-cost touch screen category at CES 2013. The AMD processor-powered HP Ultrabooks will take on current Intel-powered Ultrabooks that are in the $500 (Rs. 27,500 approx.) category in a war of the processors.

The HP Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook will start at $649 (Rs. 35,965 approx.) and will be available on February 3. The Pavilion Sleekbook will be the non-touch version which will be priced at $479 (Rs. 26,345 approx.) and will be available as soon as January 13. The TouchSmart Ultrabook will be 15.6 inches, with an AMD A6 CPU, 6GB of RAM and 750 GB hard disk. Users will be able to touch and enjoy Windows 8 on the TouchSmart Ultrabook.

The Pavilion Sleekbook on the other hand will have slightly lower specifications witth an AMD A4 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive and will not feature touch functions. The cheaper Sleekbook will come in multiple colours like red, blue and black as compared to the TouchSmart Sleekbook that will only be available in sparkling black. Both the Ultrabooks will have Dolby Advanced Audio, TrueVision HD webcam and optional discrete graphics.

They will also have replaceable batteries and number-pads, along with track-pads that support Windows 8 gestures. They will also make use of HP’s CoolSense technology. The Ultrabooks will look almost identical to the others in the SleekBook line.

HP unveils the U160, its first portable monitor

HP has unveiled the U160, a 15.6-inch monitor that has been specifically built for portability. The monitor can connect to laptops through USB and includes a foldable carrying case that can also double as a stand.

The 15.6-inch screen has a resolution of 1366 x 768 and the carrying case is made of leather. It weighs 3.4 pounds and is 1.2-inches thick. For comparison's sake, this is slightly heavier than the average Ultrabook.

The contrast ratio and brightness levels for the monitor are said to be comparable with the average notebook screen.

The main utility of the monitor can be seen in scenarios like needing to give a presentation, or even something as simple as a bunch of friends wanting to watch a movie or something on a bigger screen while travelling.

The monitor could also be useful for those who travel a lot. Some users like the ability to quickly jump to a second monitor while working on the go.

Vizio Reveals 5-Inch 1080p And 4.7-Inch 720p Androids

Two years ago, Vizio came to CES and announced the Vizio Phone, a skinned Android phone that quietly died at the hands of American carrier politics. Vizio moved on by designing and building a line of Windows PCs instead — and now that the PC line is humming along, the company is here at CES 2013 with two brand new phones... for the Chinese market.

That's Vizio's first expansion outside of North America, and while Vizio CTO Matt McRae won't come right out and say it's because of American carrier issues, he's not shy in saying that it's easier for his company to sell phones directly to Chinese consumers — unlike the carrier-dominated American market. And that's a shame, because the two phones here at CES 2013 are extremely intriguing: a high-end 5-inch 1080p device and a 4.7-inch 720p device with dual SIM slots. Both are running stock Android Jelly Bean, just like Vizio's new tablets; the 5-inch phone has an unspecified dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor with 2GB of RAM while the smaller phone has a 1.2GHz dual-core MediaTek chip with 1GB of RAM.
