I would love to be able to use this for the Merriam Webster's Dictionary but I can't get the aardtools to install on my machine (X11 on a Mac OSX Leopard). I keep getting various errors. So I can't get the XDXF file converted. Is there any place that has more dictionary option in aar format for downloading?

The trouble with Merriam Webster's XDXF is that it is most likely distributed without permission from copyright owners- which is why this otherwise fine dictionary is not up for download at aarddict.org.

As far as aardtools go, I was able to get it to work on Mac OS X with MacPorts 1.600 (to get ICU 3.8), but it is a tedious process and my environment is not clean, so I can't provide reliable instructions (also, current MacPorts is 1.7.0, which has ICU 4.0 - not sure if that would work at all). I can outline basic steps if you feel like trying it, but there's probably quite a lot of details you will have to figure out yourself.

An easier way though may be to run Ubuntu in a virtual machine (install VMWare Fusion and download Ubuntu VMWare appliance, or run it in VirtualBox) and install aardtools there.

The english wikipedia torrent doesn't link anywhere or start.

Do we run it inside maemo?

Plus, how big is the dictionary?

The link points to enwiki-20081008.v1.aarddict.torrent - you need to download the file and open it with a BitTorrent client (pick one from the list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client). English Wikipedia October 2008 dump in aard format is ~ 5.8G.

Hm, this looks nearly identical to sdictviewer, which is what I've been using up to now. Is aarddict the successor to sdictviewer, or are the two otherwise related somehow?
