I know that it is being killed off in a matter of weeks for Symbian and Windows Phone 7. I don't know if the same is true of other mobile OS like used on N9 and N900 and WebOS but I guess time will tell.

not just legacy mobile OS's. they are almost killing support for all legacy OS's including Mac OS 10.5.8 and all version released before 10.5.8. Seems like they will kill all legacy OS's. Including ours N900 and N9.

Speculating...
It is possible that there may be some security flaw which dictates this M$ move....but I doubt it.

Considering 4 factors...

1- the recent "mass-killing" of so many M$ jobs and the necessary leaner business/ corp. model they are trying to achieve...skype for legacy is bound to be on the chopping block...not enough reason to expend resources on it I'm sure.

2- Since M$ takeover of Skype...enough time has now elapsed that fewer condemning eyes are watching and fewer voices will be in outcry compared to when they 1st grabbed Skype....and their predetermined method of tactics is now to carry out Plan B...followed by goodness-knows-what PlanC ...etc.

3- Not surprised about Mac's either...which leads in part back to point #2...
Obviously ANY device not towing the M$ OS party line...Especially M$ devices and operating systems that are more recent (win phone 7 for example isn't immune ...so it naturally is extrapolated that our devices don't have a "fart in a windstorm's chance" of keeping it either) ...will be dropped.

4- Perfect business model to help push people into the new line of M$ devices who specifically need Skype.

So it seems so far to be those affected are:

-Devices that are other than M$ devices.

-especially Devices Other than M$ devices that run older OS's let alone M$ OS's that have run the time-expired course of M$ corporate responsibilities to said parent device company.

- I would imagine that ergo...
the n8x0 line will also be affected and possibly non-working

I stand clapping...commend and applaud the ruthless efficiency of Microsoft's "brush-fire" (very appropriate term) tactics of driving the digital animals out of the mobile forest ahead of the fire.

BUT.
There may still be hope for us!
Possibly running a linux distro on your device may circumvent this "Skypocalypse" if even one applicable distro is immune.

This is especially fortuitous for those who will be using the neo900.

I am sure I heard somewhere there was only one Linux dev at Skype since the M$ takeover.

Anyway IMO it's great news, now more people can move to something less proprietary.

Sorry sir, but you really believe that then you are fooling yourself. Do you really believe that all my relatives will suddenly switch to something they have never heard of just because Skype has stopped working on a phone model they have heard of?

Skype is the only IM/VoIP thingymigick I use. Not by choice but because everybody else does. I can't pee against the wind or turn the Earth's rotation. Or try to make everyone switch.

I never said I would try and make anybody switch to anything.

I feel it will make some others look to another service.
Skype for Windows especially is terrible, it eats system resources. Many only use it because they haven't heard of anything else.

If your device is no longer supported and they can't contact you, then yes; you may have to help people switch.

I haven't got time for proprietary services like this; mainly due to issues like this.

Well...
I didn't say it was less proprietary...
I said "gtalk works just as well"...
My perspective.

but I do agree with the fact pichlo pointed out...
Also...anybody I personally know who uses voip ...uses Skype.
So by proxy...by default... M$'s move is damaging even for those here who have no prob using gtalk and similar ilk in place of Skype ...but for all those who know ONLY how to use Skype ...they are in a pickle.
And it doesn't make it any easier to communicate with those people who wish to (or can) stay only with Skype.

But the overall prob actually deepens and widens to not only include Skype.

There are ALOT of local senior citizens I donate my time and help with their windows 7 computers...

ALL of them had a trial moving from xp to win7...NONE of them are going to transition to windows 8 before or after win7 shelf life expires.

I have gotten only 1 senior couple to transition to linux lite.
From the larger objective perspective the damage these moves called "progress" are doing or going to do...are truly horrible to contemplate.

It brings to a new brutal and lonely level ....of the concept of "..The technologically advanced tribe wins..." to a opera-esque vibrato ..."...The technologically advanced individual wins.."

Hmm...for those upset and having to transition to something more friendly to devices ...
let alone our devices...from Skype to something else...
and if gtalk isn't adequate enough...
Please do propose better please...
and I will most definitely try them or it....
...I'll tell all the people I know to do the same ...
and I'll happily transition to "that" better voip client..
for my n8x0's,
my n900,
my soon to be neo900
and all my laptops as well.
