When I'm connecting N900 via Bluetooth to my Windows 7 PC it's visible as 'computer':

How to make it visible as 'phone', like this:

Idk how it looks on mine (would have to wait til tomorrow).
But I guess you should delete all connections on PC and on N900 and try the pairing once again. Did you check whether all services were recognized and installed (properties of device or double-click)?

Have you already looked here? http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58570

Anyway, the interesting part of the thread seems to start about here:

Take care: your windows 7 could start producing strange sounds that if carefully evaluated could seem a scream of pain..

I don't want PAN. I just want to see my N900 in Windows as a phone, not computer - I want to make/receive calls from windows.

Even though it is labeled as "computer", after you connect via BT it will give you the ability to make/receive calls through windows. See attached screen shot.

It basically just attaches the W7 computer as a headset to the N900.

My issue is that I cannot access files on the N900 via BT as was possible on XP. On Windows 7, it seems to only have audio/telephone functions available via BT.

Checked it today and it looks like N9 and/or other cell phones connected via BT to my Win7-64 machine (a phone icon).
So again check offered services and show here.
And / or try pairing again.

But I guess also this just another Win7 erratic/stochastic/unpredictable behaviour/bug ...

@rotoflex
That's exactly what I want. Can you tell me what's your bluetooth stack?

My problem is exactly the opposite - I can access files via BT OBEX and listen music from N900 media player, but I want to make and receive calls

open Control Panel > Device Manager > Bluetooth
and tell what devices do you see

Device Manager > Bluetooth Radios

* Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver date: 6/21/2006
Driver Version: 6.1.7601.17889

*Thinkpad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate
Driver Provider: Broadcom
Driver Date: 4/8/2010
Driver Version: 6.3.5.430

If you get this sorted out, I'd like to be able to also access the N900 for mass storage via bluetooth as you are doing.
