Hello,

Does anyone know a simple way to access YouTube videos from the N900? ZouTube doesn't work for some reason. Digi@tube lags too much. MediaBox requires too many clicks. YouTube with the browser was unusable since the beginning and is practically useless now since N900 doesn't have Flash 10.1. The Mobile version of YouTube doesn't work either.

So what do I do?

And how can I do that? :/ I just re-installed zoutube from extras-testing and it doesn't play any video. I just click on "Play" and nothing happens. I click on "Select video quality" and it doesn't give me any options.

Download the app 'Tweak Flash Version', change it to the recommended one for froyo then it'll work straight from the browser.

Try going full screen if the video is laggy.

Did you recognize that you can minimize the amounts of clicks by putting shortcuts to stuff on the shelf for quick access?

There is youtube-dl, http://bitbucket.org/rg3/youtube-dl/wiki/Home. This python script downloads YouTube(YT), and Dailymotion (and other Flash - not Vimeo, Megavideo or Hulu) videos via the command line which can then be played by most media players - be it the default media player, mplayer, etc..

To use,
1. Get the script: Download the script via the website given above (or if you have Scratchbox installed you can first make Mercurial for the N900, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37094 . and then issue,
Code:
hg clone http://bitbucket.org/rg3/youtube-dl
).

2. Copy Video URL: Via a web browser traverse to the website where the video is contained, as far as I know the embedded videos don't work so one must go to the primary source, copy the URL and

3. Open a terminal: and

4. In the folder containing the script issue,
Code:
chmod 555 youtube-dl
youtube-dl <PASTE URL>
The first command gives proper permissions to execute youtube-dl and the second command uses youtube-dl to download the desired video.

Personally I have no problem playing YT videos via Flash on MicroB without over clocking the CPU - playing Vimeo vids works with max over clocking, ~1GHz. Having alternatives to using Flash is useful, especially if one is attempting to efficiently use CPU resources, and youtube-dl is one for playing YT videos.

Last edited by happymonkey; 2010-08-04 at 19:20. Reason: youtube-dl doesn't support Vimeo but does support Dailymotion.

Hi Shanrizvi,

The most simple way to get YouTube on your N900 is locate the 'MyTube' application in the repositories. Cannot recall which one it is in though.

There is a known problem with this version MyTube that prevents the playing or downloading of videos. However, the patch found below fixes this.

I have done it this week. It works, guranteed.

see post #341,
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...+patch&page=35

So there you have it! Two downloads/installs and your back to YouTubing!!

Download the Mediabox app from extras, version 2010.07.24. Once installed you can search and watch videos in very good quality from Youtube.
