What software do you use on a regular pc? I think on N900 your biggest problem will be speed/performance.

That said, in ED, you can install the regular software you use on your Linux computer. You may even be able to build that program specifically for Fremantle in SB

Really?

MIDI was developed in the early 1980s, when mainframes had 128 kB of RAM and ran at 12 MHz. It was implemented on the likes of Comodore64 and Amiga. Are you telling us that a device 50 that fast and with 2000 that much RAM would have performance problems?

?

you've used rosegarden? you know the issues that it has on a standard linux kernel? (it's a genuine question)

i'm no expert in linux or audio, but i think the problem stems from the fact that linux is not an RTOS. I've used rosegarden, and their documentation recommends a real-time kernel for serious work.

(i won't run away from the possibility that rosegarden is likely bloatware anyway)

As for being old and the rest, yes, i knew all that. I even bought an old Nokia 6230i back in the days just to enjoy 64-note polyphonic MIDIs .. again .. that dumb phone is much underpowered compared to N900

what is with the thread title?
usb midi input with midi keyboard?

sunvox https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIFRLTqInbY
milky tracker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSEobtqEzcc
even lmms in easy debian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qwdOdzPM58
are decent options that work ON the n900...
even on the n8x0...
I know milky and lmms work on n8x0 ...
(can't remember now if one of my old versions of sunvox work on n8x0...been so long since I played with it on an n8x0 ..I know I have it labeled as such in one of my storage vaults...)

To the poster ...
I suggest doing some proper power searching on the topic of audio creation production here at tmo .
Also as grand as playing with what we have is fun...
I think continuing audio work and development like this is crucial.

Even more so..
I think continued development on real time effects processing is critical....
ie : progs like gtkgep.
