AFAIK the UI is not open, but there's also mplayer and kmplayer.

I'm getting the n900 soon and I have searched the forums looking for the answer, but couldn't find it. Is the maemo5 Media Player open source? I know it's built on top of GStreamer, I'm asking about the UI.
Also, is there a feature in the UI to selec a file's text stream subtitle?
