Hello, maybe this question has already been posted... but, why is mplayer faster and much more smoother than the built in media player of the N900 ??
I got some FPS falls with the buit in mediaplayer while playing divx or avi files whereas mplayer plays it very nicely... i don't understand... isn't the built in player using gpu acceleration ??? while mplayer doesn' use it ?
i need some explanations here...

yeah, mplayer most probably uses codecs different from the ones used in gstreamer framework (some of which are implemented using DSP)...

mplayer is made by opensource enthusiasts with lots of skill and motivation while the DSP codecs were made by some company (TI?) with possibly average skilled programmers and no motivation except for the amount of $ that got printed on the invoice.

Just my 2¢

ok'ay, but since the built is gpu accelerated, shouldn't it be faster ? and will be mplayer and maybe vlc able to use gpu acceleration in the future ?

DSP is different/separate from GPU, but in theory yeah.

But that assumes that the DSP codecs are written well. Unfortunately AFAIK the DSP is closed hardware (no drivers or docs) as are the DSP Codecs so it's unlikely we'll be able to improve upon this without help from Texas Instruments or a drawn out reverse engineering project.

Mozilla project is working on a Theora codec for example, but in cooperation from TI and the results will likely be closed source as well:
