First it depends if you define Linux as in it uses the Linux kernal or it embodies the principles of open access most people think of when you say Linux.

If it's the first than a few phones have been running Linux for a while before the N900, including the G1. If it's the latter I think it's Open Moko.

On that list, I think the first one I'd call a "linux smartphone" (as opposed to a feature phone that uses linux under the hood) is the ROAD HandyPC. I remember drooling over it when it first came out, and just wishing a US version (with a US keyboard) would come out.
