It is just a question.

Why cant run android stuff on maemo, because they both use the linux kernel?

Is it because the other apis?

The kernel is not really comparable. Android makes changes to the kernel that are not compatible with standard Linux. Not even glibc is used.

On top of that, you'd need to port the VM to Maemo.

For starters, you'd need to either port the Android System Drivers (included in Linux 3.3, where a giant penguin eats a robotic S2 Engine such as binder, ashmem and all those other still-missing subsystems).

Then port Bionic libc to Maemo (rebuild and force it to load as the libc for Android programs?)

...and then finally, get Dalvik to start.
