I had more or less same problem a week days before.Prior to that I had to wait for almost one month with my N900 not booting. Don't panic as I did.Really I too have exhausted all the options. I read and re read the wiki in vain. What you must do is to follow the advices of reinob,joerg_rw to the letter.
1.Don't go for cold flashing
2.Re download the images
3.flash combined first,emmc later
4.check the usb cable.
5.In my case battery was at fault.Bought a new battery.problem solved.

If you can't flash emmc try rescue OS and format your memory manualy.

Download 2.6.37 and rescueOS-initrd-0.5.4.img and then in terminal: flasher-3.5 -k 2.6.37 -n rescueOS-initrd-0.5.4.img -l -b"rootdelay root=/dev/ram0". While holding the u key, connect the N900 to your computer via USB and put the battery to phone. If all goes well charge the battery:
/rescueOS/charge21 then check parttions, rootfs..
But please don't tell me you can't or something until you make it on linux.
