First attempt to flash N900 firmware update failed.

Borrowed a Vista machine and started NSU - detected the device and started to update. N900 rebooted and showed usbconnected on Nokia screen (like n810 firmware updates) and NSU said 15 minutes remaining.

Waited 1.5 hours and nothing changed.

Prayed to the FSM and pulled the cable. Then pulled the battery to force a reboot. Old rom loaded (.41-10).

Anyone else failed to update their device using NSU? If this happens to consumers I imagine they'll be pretty annoyed.

Anyways thanks nokia for reminding me why I stopped using proprietary POS software. Im still disappointed that there is no image for the linux flasher on a so called 'open' device.

Does anyone have any insight into why it might have failed to flash?

NSU is really bad, not even supported on Win7 at the moment.
When you use NSU, make sure it's on an Vista machine or lower. Win7 is fine as long as it's run under compatibility mode.

Did it freeze at the downloading or updating?

Froze at the updating after downloading the software. I only have access to vista here (gf's computer) as I use only linux on my machine

Ah, you can check the logs of the update.
It's given every detail process NSU took with timestamps, if there are any errors, it'll be in there.
Worth take a look.

Logs of NSU can be found @ C:\Program Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\

You don't have to, there's FOTA alternative
Just takes abit longer to get the newest firmware compare to NSU due to extra testing.

Agree NSU should be available on Linux as well. This could take a while, they haven't fix the issue with Win7 yet let alone making one for Linux...

OK, retried this again on another borrowed vista machine.

This time before flashing I removed the micro-sd card and cleared about 10Mb on the root partition.

Success! No corrupted partitions and the device boots fine.

looks like i should try to reflash it...

I discover that the internal memory is mounted on /dev/mmcblk0p3 rather than /dev/mmcblk0p1
