I've tried it in several ereader programs and none of them seems to be able to render the ASCII art from the "illustrated" version of Flatland from proj. Gutenberg correctly, i checked the HTML version straight on the site and the issue doesn't seem to be on the source material; any suggestions?

Have you tried using a fixed width font?

Which version of the flatland are you viewing? HTML/plain-text/Kindle/??

If you are viewing the plain text, have you tried decreasing font size - maybe the text is wrapping and wreaking havoc on the formatting?

And maybe post a screenshot to illustrate your problem.

I downloaded it using mGutenberg , which format does it pick?

On the readers that do recognize the different text styles, it looks like the monospaced font isn't as monospaced as it should be. I'll post a screenshot in a moment.

Hm, ok while looking for examples to screnshot, when i went to mGutenberg i spotted several ASCII art images that did render correctly, but a few did not, it seems indeed the issue, at least in mGutenberg is linewrapping (and things get really nasty in portrait mode)

i use MeBook
most of the .epub files ive got already have the cover art embedded into the file,
but for some reason they dont show up in the MeBook app

im using this windows program to fix the files:
http://www.juliansmart.com/ecub

its worked on 90% of them so far

on pc install and run the program
choose 'new'

enter the new book title
(identifier can be a random number)
and enter the author

create a new empty folder on desktop

on the project location screen make sure the new empty folder is selected
as the 'project file folder'

on the 'choose import method' screen
choose 'from an existing epub'
and browse/select the epub file you want to fix
click next

(please wait, importing.....)

click next

you should see your cover art on this screen
click finish

back in the main window
click edit
open options tab
tick 'generate cover page'
ok

click 'compile'
the fixed epub file will be in the new empty folder you created at the beginning
make sure to delete everything from that folder before starting a new book

this is all a bit of a task but it works for (almost!) everything ive tried
the ones that didnt work ive just deleted as i like to keep the app looking nice

edit:
im also using this:
http://calibre-ebook.com/
as a library to preview ebooks on pc before editing them
its handy for getting the metadata / author name ect.
its supposed to embed cover art too
but it dont work for MeBook cos still none of them show up on the phone so i do it the other way
