Thanks for this! Last nail in the coffin as far as my purchasing phones from Huawei!

Another reason for not buying Huawei phones for me. I'll probably choose Oneplus which is much more open, from kernel source to device tree.

Disappointing to find out they no longer do what I never knew they were doing in the first place.

I recon someone needs to create (if it doesn't already exist) a database of phone manufacturers, phone models and phone variants (e.g. carrier specific versions or versions for different countries/frequency bands) and ranking them on how open and hackable they are.

It could include details of things like:
Is the bootloader for the device unlocked, locked but with an unlock option or locked without an unlock?
Has the manufacturer provided a full correct kernel source tree, a kernel source tree that is incorrect, out-of-date, missing bits or otherwise not 100% compliant with the GPL or no kernel source at all?
Has the manufacturer provided any other source code or items that help with running your own Android ROMs on the device or with running Linux or other alternative OSs?
How friendly is the manufacturer towards people wanting to run alternative OSs on the device?
How open is the hardware and software on the device?

And anything else that hackers might want to know.

Such a database (if kept up to date) could really help people who want a hackable phone but don't have an easy way to tell which of the options available to them (or affordable to them) will be the best choice to buy and which manufacturers and phones to avoid.

this is the most ridiculous company policy I have come across, how many percent of their customers they just lost? Any successful company knows the value of that smallest amount in that percentage. Have never really been a big fan anyway but was beginning to admire the OnePlus, should I change my mind about that one as well?

Jonwil has it right...
one of us should do a full write up ..
categorized.
It would be an aid not just for our community either...but for just about anyone who reads it...

dameceno ...
Honestly speaking and with zero rancor toward any manufacturer past or present ...
It is a wise thing to be cautious..
No manufacturer is beyond doing what Huawei just did....or worse...
One cannot control what an external body (from one's self ...that is) may think...wish...plan or implement ...
The only devices that one can truly be sure of are devices which said manufacturers have completely given up the rights to...
Such as the NIT-line...

or current devices which must be self assembled ...(and even here...there is no absolute certainty that things may close up...but since the basis and appeal for such devices are their open factors...it is less likely to happen ...since their sales are tied to the open factors...)
devices such as the Pi-line
Or the Beagleboard-line
etc..

Just like the assault on the internet to close it up...to control it...to restrict collaboration ...etc..
I see what is occurring in the realm of mobile ...as tantamount to the same thing...
It seems and feels piecemeal...
But stepping back and looking at the scope and effect of companies here and there ...past and present...altering the way that devices will function feels in the larger scheme of things...
An attempt to herd everyone into the same direction ...
an attempt to control and dictate...
what we do..
how we use ...
what we wish...

I have only one question; who here actually owned a Huawei device?
