Umm. Whatsapp does push. Does gtalk/jabber on N900 support push IM?

Sure it does. It's called instant messaging isn't it?

Google talk comes default with all android phones and with newer blackberries. So the market is huuuge.

And the fun part is that it supports video and voice calling too.

Thats not what i said. You said that everybody uses Whatsapp in the Netherlands and thats definitly not true. I'm not using it (and none of my friends are) so thats not everybody.

But if you haven't learnt anything about the bad things of the closed iPhone and the good things about open standards, keep hoping that they release an app so that they can lock you in. I moved on and see the endless opportunities of open systems.

Guess our definition of push is a bit different.
With whatsapp, you do not need to be connected to 3G data connection all the time.
It basically sends an sms to your mobile number when new message is received.
Then you connect to the whatsapp sever via 3G data to retrieve the mesage.

With gtalk, you need to be logged in or you won't get the message.
So to me, it's not really a push.

and i dont think.. we can create PUSH into our n900.. we can connect and disconnect our connections.. so what is PUSH then ?

Push is something that you cant turn off.. like the blackberry messenger.

And I don't see how receiving a message telling me to manually connect to the server to retrieve my real message is push. It's like my letter carrier leaving a card telling me I need to drive to the post office to collect a package. "Push" would be bringing the package to my door.

I think what we need is more like confirming the delivery of a message.
I use google talk and many times when the connection cuts for a couple of seconds and I'm supposed to receive a message I don't receive it or send a message it doesn't send it.
