I did a search for "simple text root" and nothing comes up.

Is there a specific name for it?

Sorry for my ignorance, but I am new to editing files on the N9.

After entering devel-su it is asking for a password. And I do not know the root password for the N9.

Someone says they don't know how to edit files and you suggest they have root access?

What could possibly go wrong?

With root, everything can go wrong.
Sadly, its needed for this.

Yes, root is needed for this.
But if he follows to the letter, all will be good
copy/paste each single block into terminal and press enter

So, to be on the safe side (added one -possibly needed- line break), do:
Code:
devel-su
then enter the default root password:
Code:
rootme
and then
Code:
echo "" >> /etc/hosts
echo "213.128.137.20 connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com" >> /etc/hosts
exit

Thank you. I have followed your instructions, then used the text editor to open the file /etc/hosts to verify that the code is present.......and it is.

I have never used copy and paste on the N9. Not really sure how. So I used a bluetooth keyboard and typed in the commands.

Again thank you.

You could also use WinSCP - remotely login as root and use the built in editor to modify hosts file in the blink of an eye.

I'm sorry. Actual app is on openrepos and it is KhtSimpleText. Also there is root patch for KhtSimpleText but I think I added it using N9 QTweak.

I registered to thank you (all) for the support, I am rather a newby to all of this and still I managed more or less to keep my N9 working. I had a problem with the mail app, it would load forever and not come up with anything and also send a Mail I wrote several times. After I got rid of half the mails in my inbox (perhaps there were too many) and clearing the database on n9 (see https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=84783) it worked again! but now I had this problem that the automatically set connections switched to manually, and I have no idea how, but your line fixed it, so thank you!
