Can someone port IP Messenger to N900?
It is open source. Its a convenient tool for chatting and transferring files over LAN. Its already available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android.
Heres its main website link: http://ipmsg.org/index.html.en

I'll take a look at recompiling and packaging it over the next few days.

FWIW, Salut/Bonjour works fine for this on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android.

Serverless chat. Automatic announcement of status and others. There's already a telepathy plugin for it and I've been using it for quite some time.

Most distribution support it right out of the box, Ubuntu has it in the regular chat section, iChat supports it and there are numerous Windows, Android and iOS Bonjour/Salut clients.

A small update because its taking so much time: I've attempted to compile gipmsg from the links on the main page. All dev on gipmsg stopped since 2000 and it expects gtk 1.2.x Since then the world has moved on to gtk 2.
Compilation quite naturally isn't happening.

I've moved on to trying g2ipmsg. That one seems to work.
Will post results as I get them.

I've got a binary. Haven't tested it yet, but it's getting late here. Anyone want to take a crack at it?

I'll look at optifying this and some testing in the next few days.

Thanks, I will try out the binary and let you know. In the meantime I found another ipmessenger client which works good on ubuntu, "iptux", avaliable here http://code.google.com/p/iptux/downloads/list. This seems to be the most recent clients.

downloaded and xtracted the binary directly on n900. when i click on it using file manager, i get "select an application from the list". i tried to give it execute permission from the shell by chmod, but it just never gets execute permission.

That doesn't sound right. I could give exec permissions and they stuck. Running it didn't work because libgnomeui-0 wasn't present. After installing that library (and all it's dependencies) it starts running but I don't see any window or anything.

I'll have a look at the third one you mentioned.

I've compiled iptux. Window shows up after some time.
Not finger friendly.
