Hi,

I would love to have an application for my n900 that helps me to locate an access point, for the situations where I can get a very low strength signal on an open access point somewhere and want to move closer to it.

I have a memory of small devices that did this specifically, but I can't find any via google that actually give a direction as opposed to just strength, so maybe I am misremembering.

What I have in mind is a simple gui that allows you to scan for networks, pick a network and then there is a big arrow on the screen that points in the direction you should walk to get better signal strength. This might initially be random and have you walking in an increasing spiral until the software can get an idea of which direction gives better strength.

I am a coder (although haven't done more than a couple of scripts for the n900), but I have zero time at the moment to get this up and running. I do, however, feel it would be useful for many people, so I decided to put the idea out there

Cheers,

Ben

PS. I found http://serverfault.com/questions/889...based-upon-the while searching for ideas...

Triangulation or RF direction finding of WiFi is not possible in the N900 due to hardware limitations.

What you have probably heard about is trilateration where you use receive strength to make a bit of a rough estimate of location - any such attempt in the N900 would require you to move around though.

Probably needs to move around quite alot to rule out GPS position ambiguity, and that would only work outdoors and if there aren't any buildings or structures obstructing the wifi signal...

In other words, if you were in a flat desert, you could do it..
