Yeah, back in the good old days, this was true. Sadly, in recent years Microsoft has moved to a licensing scheme where they take note of the hardware in your computer and associate it with your OS license somewhere in one of their databases. Thus, if you later try to install your copy of Windows on a new PC, Microsoft will realize that your hardware has changed, and you won't be allowed to complete the installation. Also, if you upgrade an existing Windows PC too much, the OS will recognize that the hardware has changed, and will require you to contact Microsoft to regain authorization to run Windows.

I believe this change started back with Windows 7 (Vista). (Here's one article describing how the licensing system works.)

could we pretty please get back on topic? :-(

@mods: could you please move #30 thru this post to another thread? Thanks!
On next post:
i'm still absolutely unclear about what they are afraid. Nobody so far answered what exactly could be an illegal or suspicious action in what FPTF does (this thread is about FPTF, not Neo900, and Ivgalvez clearly threatened/scared the devels contributing to FPTF). Just claiming "there may be C&D" is FUD in my book. Please elaborate against whom and against what such C&D could be addressed. Please do so by editing existing posts, not to add even more OT posts to this thread.

Exactly the concerns I raised: The dedication of this project to just Neo900.

Neo900 is not appealing to me, so this project is not appealing to me in its current, sharp-focused form.

Thus I'm probing if this project even considers broadening its target.

sorry that's nonsense. A project can't consider anything. People do. This project is what YOU make of it. Full stop.

How do you even propose to have a complete & fully functional Freemantle stack, don't see how that's do-able...
Even if you're well on the way to that & it's looking truly feasible, why drain (already very limited resources) from Nemo/Sailfish?

Please take that "drain" rant elsewhere! None of those working in this project has stopped working for sailfish to do so.

in the case if you succeed 100% replacing nokia bloobs(gps , mce ,rtcom....), those could be adapted for the old n900? or the target is only the neo?
I like the porting task force , imagine that ''atacking'' nemo or even arch

Please take that obnoxious tone elsewhere, it was not a rant, it was 2x genuine/honest questions.
You've no way of knowing that it'd have 0 impact, in all likelihood it will, good in some ways, but overall -potentially- a significant drain.

every devel is doing whatever she likes. Some seem to like FPTF. Nobody is going to stop them. Of course professionals develop software in a way so it is maximum universal and portable, nevertheless you are free to join and take special care about stuff like "fremantle on N9" or whatnot.Backporting to N900 is not only a natural goal of this project but also a valuable intermediate step in development, since for now we don't have any better platform to emulate the Neo900 which is still under development and thus not available yet for real tests.

and now please back on topic! This thread is for devels only, and concerns about porting fremantle that are not at all related to the developers' work please go to the "concerns" thread linked in post#2. Thanks!
