Me somehow too (even though it seems not to be very possible). The recent trends OSX and Windows take are kinda scary. Windows 8 isn't anymore what I call a desktop platform and OSX became restricted and buggy since OSX 10.7 Lion (called the Windows Vista of OSX versions). Both go more and more into tablet-OS-design but I still don't see (and many others too) what should be the advantage of this. Only the companies itself have some good advantages and reasons to do that.

I hear barely any positive comments or talks about the Windows 8 enhancements, but a lacking competition makes companies force stuff on end-users they don't really want.

Prior to that you might want to test some candidates that you think are promising in a virtual machine or as a live system.

*) No, I won't tell you which one is best, because there is no such thing like a "best" linux distro since that highly depends on your preferences.
