I took one more look at python-setuptools. And I decided:

I won't proceed with it until some sane python3 support is available.
It's a crucial package for building python apps and I don't want to do the work twice.
I put my porting on hold until python3-defaults is there, otherwise it simply makes no sense.

@Android_808: Did you see this? https://wiki.debian.org/Python/Policy

/edit: I'll go ahead with dh_python when I have python3-defaults.

Hi think I'll start with building lxml and pillow from jessie source packages.
To do this, I'll need dh_python2. I think I'll build it from python-defaults..
We should be able to use dh_python without python-3 packages.

If this is not possible, I'll build python 3.

wazrus,

for building dh_python3 we require python3-defaults. Maybe we could do this without it, but...

it's why I cling to the idea of python3 modules. The upstream versions are compatible with python3. More and more applications will use python3. So if we don't take the opportunity of adding the python3 modules at once, we might have to do the same amount of work once more. Or me might never have the manpower for it.

And we don't need much work to add the python3 modules.

It's why I'm waiting for info from Aapo! And it's why no info exasperates me so much - I don't know what to do with the current situation.

dh_python2 from python-defaults is deprecated, iirc.

I had overlooked at dh_python2 in python-defaults. I found that it was only a diversion
around the script in dh-python.
So, to have dh-python, we could:
A - get python3
B - remove python3 from dh-python building

Building python 3 modules too would indeed be a great plus. So we should go for A ?

We should go for A. See the post in the python3 thread.

A small announcement: Aapo uploaded his python3.4. I've started work on python3-defaults, we're tracking down the bugs (duplicate files) for the time being.

Now I'm waiting for him to push the maemo7 revision of python3.4 to continue my testing.

I have the packages built, only the correct installation has to be ensured. I'm not pushing anything to the repos yet (besides, there's a package python3 which is requested to be removed)

@gianko: I guess so, as it requires newer python.

Status update: this project is not abandoned.
Since Aapo has uploaded a newer revision of python3.4 I'll hopefully go ahead with python3-defaults. But I'll be very busy up to 14th Apr, so be patient

Thanks for the update. Hopefully, by the time we're in a position to do some python packages I'll be a bit more with it.

I've been a bit down lately as some projects (libretro-prboom, Love2D...) have either been disappointing or not working. Job is getting to me as well. I'm also trying to find enthusiasm to look at porting Cordia's hildon/clutter1 port to using Gnome-Shells ST in place of Mx (which is in place of Tidy from Fremantle ) . get_iplayer package needs an update, probably doing Sunday afternoon as usual.

Ladies and gentlemen. I've just pushed python3-defaults to extras-devel. I'm taking one more look into python-setuptools 3.3.

It's not thoroughly tested, but the most important things install cleanly and work.

Who is taking python-qt4 and the other essentials? We need to start planning
