How stable is it?
Absolutely stable for everyday device use. Mainstream distros would say "stable for use with production devices"

Versions before 1.0-9 had some bug that insisted on using "design capacity" where it shouldn't, resulting in absurds like 3100/1240 mAh reported, when using kernel-power modules. Probably same for vanilla BME, haven't tested - the point is, that full capacity was always wrong (although, for single-cell battery users it *might* seemed like plausible, real full capacity - was fake one in reality, nonetheless).

AFAIK, version in thumb is 1.0-8, so you need to enable cssu-devel, install status-area-applet-battery (it doesn't pull any dependencies from cssu-devel), then disable cssu-devel again. YMMV, so feel free to test 1.0-8 yourself.

The thumb version has a gconf key, /apps/osso/status-area-applet-battery/use_design_capacity

I'm still worried by the known issues.
Premature shutdown: so is it possible to calibrate in any way? If not using the design capacity, won't it cause insane results?

And the wiki states that any programs using the BME replacement break after 32 cycles after last calibration. The premature shutdown issue makes it more severe, doesn't it?

Yea, but before 1.0-9 version, it was doing nothing, for me. YMMV.

The premature shutdown thing was fixed ages ago. It nows calibrate properly before shutting down. Well, at least for me.

By using the gconf key (value 0, aka "don't use go-damned-sucking design capacity, EVER! It's bad. Wrong. Just stop it.), if uncalibrated (that happens after 32 cycles without calibrating), you will get max capacity reported as default value (2048 mAh). So, nothing crashes, nothing breaks, you just get wrong value, unless you do that calibration, finally. So, everything is as it should be.
---

Summing it up, the only bug with latest BME Replacement that I'm aware of, is the one about still using design capacity for calculating which graphical icon (battery "fullness") to show. It's quite frustrating (as it seems that it would be few-liner fix for someone who knows what he is doing), but one can live with it...

What does that "x hours / y days" in the applet mean? In my case x=5, y=6

Estimated time 'till end of battery, active use (usage with the same current as right now, to be precise) / standby. During charging, it's the same, but untill battery gets full.

If using bq27x00 module, those estimation should come directly from charging chip. Well, at least the "active use" one, as I have no idea how it calculates the "standby" variant and it seems overestimated.

Chip gives only remaining times for usage @ actual current for usage @ average current used since last charging, and it is what BNF reports. Maybe battery applet take clculation based on lowest current used, from somewhere? No idea, as said.

Now you caould say "thanks" to me for all this BME Replacement related info, by editing the heavily outdated wiki page and stuffin' it up with what I've written in all those posts

Cheers,
/Estel

6 days on standby is very optimistic

Ah, thanks for that. Quote useful. I've never noticed.

I actually remember having mine once last a whole week while on holiday, as much stuff was switched off as possible. But not much use except faster to switch into usable mode (compared to switch off completely) </OT>

Yea, I think it's overestimated/pulled out of hat, totally. The fun fact is that with 3000 mAh battery, it's also estimating me 6 days on standby, which, as I understand, is the same estimation that people are getting with regular 1300 mAh batteries. So, I would say the latter (pulled out of... hat) is more likely to be correct

Could the applet show estimated time @current and @average instead? (even by editing the sources and building on one's own)
