Hi,

some of you may remember that we warned from early on that there's urgent need to finish the work on bringing the N9/N950 kernel in Nemo to 3.x in order to keep it alive for an extended period, as we'll need to update systemd at some point, bringing in 3.0 as minimal supported kernel version capable of running SailfishOS.

Back then it was a rather abstract thing to happen at some point, now we have a rough date estimation: In about 3 months we will roll out an update for SailfishOS containing a new systemd version which will _not_ boot on kernels before 3.0. Or, in other words, if the 3.x kernel port we started for the N9 long time ago does not get finished by community during the next months newer versions of SailfishOS will _not_ work on N9/N950. Our userland will rely on new systemd functionality, so trying to pull in only parts of an update after we do that switch will _not_ work.

If you want to help with the porting, please head over to the Nemo bugzilla, category hardware adaptation, get the kernel sources from git, and start hacking:

https://bugs.nemomobile.org/buglist....resolution=---

I'm available on IRC in #nemomobile on Freenode for additional questions.

Filip Matijević is working actively on the 3.5.3 kernel, see: https://github.com/filippz/kernel-adaptation-n950-n9

there is not much left to get the kernel in a state where it is usable for everyday purpose
