OK HERE IS THE PROCEDURE TO CUSTOMIZE LXDE...
IT DOESN'T MATTER YOU ARE USING N900, DESKTOP(PC), LXDE ON HP TOUCHPAD OR ANYTHING... IT SHOULD WORK FOR ALL...

1) Download and Extract the zip files to your N900 (MyDocs) in LXDE theme folder

2) click and hold on toolbar & select "panel settings"

3) under Geometry in size choose
width = 800 pixels
height = 46 pixels(for big taskbar) to 27 pixel(decent size taskbar)
&
make icon = 45 pixels to 26 pixels (just keep it one pixel smaller then above)

4) Select Appearance & in background select image & browse to the taskbar image provided(the one that looks like a long strip)

5) change font color to white(or what ever you want)

changing start menu icon
6) now select Panel applets ...
select menu and click edit on right side buttons..

7) choose the icon file from the folder you just copied
if you want you can remove all the shortcuts in the taskbar as they arent suitable for all the themes (select application launchbar & press edit & remove them... you can add them any time you want with the same process)

changing background
8) click & hold anyware on the desktop & select desktop settings

9) select & browse to the wallpaper provided & change mode to stretch & fill entire screen

10) press menu(start) button & select preferences & select Openbox config manager..
select theme - for LONGHORN(my favourite) i have used FOG-i

11) press Ctrl + "." to move this window up & select close..

12) restart LXDE & ENJOY

repeat the same prosidure to change between themes...

i am considering your lxde already looks like windows98 use to appear... ie taskbar in bottom & not like default LXDE appearance ie upper left corner...
pls refer to this post too...
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=70371

tell me if you were able to do it

and do share your themes if you make some of your Own...

You do realize that the images (background and start button) in your Win7 archive are a direct violation of MS EULA 3.c.?

You might be able to create a similar, actually working sidebar with gkrellm [1].

"Win98 style" IS the default appearance of LXDE [2]. It was changed for Easy Debian to make better use of the small screen.
