I bought the N900, but this unit is way beyond me (I'm pushing 80, and wouldn't dare to go into the "insides" of this machine, even if I knew how - which I don't).
I'm quite happy using a few basic functions: contacts, calendar, phone, Wi-Fi).
I wouldn't consider doing stuff like overclocking, and other stuff I read about in these pages. Matter of fact, I don't know what "root", "kernel" or "repository" means.

Problem: Some time ago, the blue notification light changed. It now gives two very short flashes instead of the one normal flash it used to give.
I was hoping PR1.3 might solve the problem, but it didn't.

Any suggested fixes which I may be able to understand and apply?

Thanks!

Quick reply...

When it started? What changes were made at this time? Software update? Application installed?

You can read and edit notification light patterns practically to anything you want. Just be careful.

I understand it may be difficult for you to use x terminal to edit system files.

So, start by looking at:
Applications->Settings->Notification light

If everything is well here, you can install this application:

It has graphical user interface and should work without problems, I hope.

Though I personally used X Terminal to edit LED patterns.

The "normal" (meaning the standard coming out of package) is two short blue flashes, not one. Led pattern editor mentioned earlier is a good solution to this.

OK - I downloaded and installed the LED Pattern Editor.
At least, I think I installed it - I can see it when I go to "Application Manager" > "Uninstall".
BUT: I can not find any where on the N900 where I can invoke the program.
Can you walk me through that?

Thanks!

That would probably be the better method - but I'm scared of all the warnings I see about bricking the unit when one is not careful.
You know about this "Fools rush in . . . " thing? I have been a fool too many times in my life . . .

it should be in the Settings menu. You can edit the colours there.

Dont worry too much about bricking. It's almost impossible to mess it up beyond repaid.

First line from http://wiki.maemo.org/LED_Pattern_Editor:

A control panel applet to edit notification light blinking patterns.

Seeing as within the menu structure it is referred to as 'Settings', I think 'Control panel applet' should be re-worded, it isn't so much 'misleading' as 'plain unhelpful'.

"But I don't have a 'control panel', this isn't windows!"

Excuse me but why bother editing the notification patterns? If I understood well you're just asking why it's blinking two short flashes now instead of one? So are you asking for an explanation why that happened or asking for a solution to make it blink one at a time again?

Well to answer for what I understand the question is... two short blinks of blue light indicates an unread new message from conversations application. Perhaps you have some unread message which you didn't noticed?

Thanks! to everyone who responded.
It was very helpful.
From here on in, I think I'll be able to play with it on my own.

Thanks again!
