Actually there's only the Google Translate client for the N900, it supports many languages but it still needs improvements. If you want to try it, maybe this thread will be helpful:

Let me know what you think about that.

Use the fact the N900 is online to your advantage. Try adding these links to your bookmarks:
http://www.wordreference.com/fren/parler
http://www.wordreference.com/enfr/learn

Or go directly to http://www.wordreference.com if you work with a number of languages.

There is a QStarDict in Extras-testing ( http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38984 ). It's an offline dictionary. But you have to download dictionary databases first to use it. It also has a web based dictionary plugin but it is not very useful.
You can find dictionaries for it at http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down2/inde...ormat=StarDict or at http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries.php

I found the dictionary app on the N97 mini to be extremely useful. Not only is it completely local (once installed), it includes noun gender for languages such as German.

Pity this isn't available on N900, but I'm sure it's not trivial to port it to Maemo.

I'm using Aard Dictionary with the Collaborative International Dictionary of English, which incorporates the Webster Unabridged, I think from 1915.
